SUMMIT RESPONSIBLE SOLUTIONS INTRODUCES MOSQUITO DUNKS

It all starts with a mosquito bite. As temperatures rise, dogs are at a much greater rise from mosquito-borne heartworm disease.

Heartworm larvae cannot mature into adult heartworms without passing through mosquitoes before infecting a susceptible animal host. Unfortunately, mosquito-borne heartworm is a threat to puppies and dogs in all 50 states in the USA.

"The outbreak of West Nile virus has gotten the headlines during the past few years, but other diseases are also spread by mosquitoes," said Jonathan Cohen, mosquito control expert and president of Summit Responsible Solutions, manufacturer of Mosquito Dunks, the number-one selling biological mosquito control product. "Heartworm is a serious threat to dogs throughout the United States, so it's important to control mosquitoes that can carry the disease."

When a mosquito infected with heartworm bites a dog, cat, or other susceptible animal, it passes on the heartworm larvae (microfilaria), which enter the animal through the bite wound. Approximately six to nine months after the bite, the heartworm larvae mature. Over a period of 7-9 months, the larvae mature into worms, migrate and take up residence in the pulmonary blood vessels and heart chambers. According to the American Heartworm Society, untreated heartworm cases can eventually cause the death of infected dogs.

Mosquito Dunks provide a reliable way to kill mosquito larvae before they can become disease-carrying adults. The active ingredient in Mosquito Dunks is B.t.i. (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) a bacterium that is toxic specifically to mosquito larvae. B.t.i. is not harmful to fish, birds, pets, wildlife, people or beneficial insects. Mosquito Dunks have been approved by the EPA for use in fish habitats, and the dunks are approved for organic use.

Simply place a Mosquito Dunk in any standing water-such as in ponds, fountains, rain gutters and shallow areas in the landscape where water has collected. One Mosquito Dunk will treat up to 100 square feet of surface water for up to 30 days. The same active ingredient (B.t.i.) is also available in a granulated form in Mosquito Bits.
Mosquito Dunks and Mosquito Bits are available at garden centers everywhere. For more information, visit Summit Responsible Solutions.
