Tallahassee, Florida -- With the official start of winter on Sunday, December 21, the nonprofit Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) has launched the third annual Great Winter Weather Party KOHLER Generator Sweepstakes. One lucky family will win a fully-automatic 8-kilowatt KOHLER home generator (model 8RESVL) which can power home systems, including appliances, electronics, heating/cooling, lights, refrigerators, sump pumps, security alarms, and more when the power goes out.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, severe weather caused 87 percent of widespread power outages affecting 50,000 or more customers from 2003 to 2012, making it the number one cause of power outages in the United States.

Increasing numbers of families are investing in home generators as they:

•Provide heat for warmth and comfort
•Prevent pipes from freezing and causing costly water damage
•Keep well and sump pumps operational for running water, toilets, and drainage of melting snow and ice
•Help preserve food and fresh water
•Help families stay informed of weather and travel conditions

"Last winter's widespread storms, power outages, and cold temperatures are good reminders for families to prepare now for this winter season," said FLASH President and CEO Leslie Chapman-Henderson. "Home generators are one of the best ways to keep loved ones safe and comfortable while avoiding expensive damage to your home."

The Great Winter Weather Party is an educational initiative presented by FLASH, KOHLER Generators, and State Farm Insurance Companies to raise awareness of winter weather preparedness and best practices, from safe ways to keep warm and prepare outdoor spaces to proper home insulation and power outage safety.
